Advancing science & technology for the betterment of Malaysia 2050
Putrajaya, 6 October 2017 – The National Innovation and Creative Economy 2017 exposition (NICE 2017), billed as the largest showcase of science, technology and innovation in the country, will be opening its doors o the public this October 12 till October 16, 2017. Open to the public, the main expo will take place at Technology Park Malaysia (TPM) with satellite events taking place at both the National Science Centre and the Planetarium. Bringing together representatives from the technology, edutainment, ICT, wellness and knowledge sectors, NICE 2017 will explore Malaysia’s future economic and social landscape. This is in consonance with the country’s aspiration towards becoming a high income and developed nation that is driven by innovation by the year 2050.

Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Panglime Wilfred Madius Tangau, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) said, “NICE 2017 is a platform to achieve that objective by fostering and cultivating the culture of science, technology and innovation (STI) amongst Malaysians. The expo is also aimed at promoting innovation and creative economics, and to enhance Malaysia’s overall STI competitiveness in order to remain relevant in the face of socio-economic challenges.” Tangau added that the next 30 years will be critical as the country will need to take action now to be prepared for the socio-economic implications of disruptive future technologies and new business models.
Recognizing this, MOSTI through the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), in 2015 embarked on an Emerging Science, Engineering and Technology (ESET) study that aimed to provide STI Foresight input to our flagship initiative on Envisioning Malaysia 2050, which contributes input on STI to the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) programme. The ESET study focuses on how energizing science, engineering and technology will shape Malaysia towards 2050.
“We will be launching the results of our foresight study at NICE 2017 where we have identified 21 technologies out of the 98 current global technology growth areas for the country to focus on. The foresight study is aimed at ensuring Malaysia takes the necessary steps to prepare our industries, enhance the future well-being of our citizens and fuel our industries to help the nation develop in a sustainable manner,” Tangau said. One of the key drivers to meet these future challenges is to establish a strong talent pool in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) that will drive innovation capacity, increase productivity, and promote sustainability and competitiveness. “We therefore encourage all Malaysians, industry leaders and SMEs to take this opportunity to come to NICE 2017 and experience first-hand the possible future of the country.”
Signature programmes that will be conducted over the five days include the Journey to Malaysia 2050 pavilion, KL Science Fiction exhibition, Smart Homes, Microsoft Future Jobs, Animation Village, National ICT Security Discourse, Drone Racing GP, a showcase by Petrosains and a Fun Run for Science. NICE 2017 will be free to members of the public at all three venues and takes place from 10am to 10pm daily. For more information, please visit: http://niceexpo.mosti.gov.my
