KUALA LUMPUR, 19 September 2019 – Kuala Lumpur once again successfully hosted the ‘11th  International Conference on World Class Sustainable Cities 2019 (WCSC 2019)’ held on Thursday, 19th September 2019 at the Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur Hotel, Jalan Conlay, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia which generated overwhelming response from more than 550 delegates representing the built-environment industry professionals, City Managers, Government agencies, academicians, Residents’ Groups, NGO’s and city stakeholders. The Guest-of-Honor, Y.B. Tuan Haji Khalid bin Abd. Samad, Minister of Federal Territories, Malaysia graciously officiated the ‘WCSC 2019 Opening Ceremony’ who shared some of the main challenges in the planning and development of the Federal Capital of Malaysia in terms of the provision of affordable housing, traffic congestion and environmental concerns, to name a few.

Themed ‘NEXT: KL2040’, this 11th WCSC conference series explored how Kuala Lumpur and other cities in Malaysia can prepare for today’s and tomorrow’s challenges towards becoming a World Class Sustainable and Livable City. As Kuala Lumpur embarks on a new journey to the future through its new KL Structure Plan and KL City Plan 2040, the re-planning for the next 20 years will now need to look at the needs and aspirations of the City and come up with a long-term view of its development plans and challenges from various perspectives such as demographic changes, climate change, technology disruptions and scarcity of land.

 

WCSC 2019 featured an eminent line-up of distinguished international World-Class and local speakers including Panelists/Moderator from the Netherlands, Australia, Singapore, and also from Malaysia, globally renowned for their innovative ideas and solutions towards present and future urban planning issues and challenges towards providing an improved and healthier living habitat which is more livable, resilient, inclusive and sustainable. The first Keynote Speaker, Mr. Stuart Moseley, Chief Executive Officer, Victorian Planning Authority, Melbourne, Australia explained on the overall planning and mechanisms successfully put in place towards maintaining Melbourne’s ranking as one of the top World-Class Livable Cities.

Another Keynote Speaker, Ms. Caroline Bos, Co-Founder / Principal Urban Planner, UNStudio, Amsterdam, the Netherlands shared on the concept of ‘Deep Planning’ where design should always follow an integrated, holistic approach that considers all parameters integrally in order to create solutions and organizations that are future-focused, healthy and human-centric. Mr. Fong Chun Wah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Building), Housing & Development Board (HDB), Singapore highlighted on Singapore’s effective planning and transformation of public places and spaces for the people in a high-density city. Whist Mr. Frans-Anton Vermast, Strategy Advisor & International Smart City Ambassador, Amsterdam Smart City, the Netherlands spoke on how public & private partnership can work and come together to create a Smart City in terms of opportunities for novel appliances and services that make cities and their regions an inclusive society and a more habitable place for people to live, work and play.

WCSC series over the past 11 years has contributed and achieved much positive results in Kuala Lumpur and other cities in Malaysia through successful implementation learnt from past conference series including the transformation of Cheongyecheon River restoration in Seoul, Korea that was a great prelude to Kuala Lumpur’s River of Life project; Brazil’s Curitiba experience for its exemplary city transportation solutions; Hong Kong and Singapore’s pedestrianization projects that include covered walkway systems to make cities for the people; the metamorphosis of Kaohsiung, Taiwan from an industrial polluter to an ecological tourist hub demonstrating that livable cities are creative an competitive, to name a few.

 

As part of the WCSC 2019 programme, some of the concurrent events and activities organized include the ‘WCSC 2019 Welcome Dinner’, ‘MasterClass Session’, ‘Young People’s Lab (YPL) 2019’ and a ‘Photography Competition’.
