Five days before the nation celebrate its 54th National Day, three ladies will lead 12 voluntary climbers up Mount Kinabalu. These climbers have one mission – to reach the peak and make their climb in support of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) a success.
The plan to climb Mount Kinabalu was actually a personal challenge between two friends – Kattie Hoo and Doreen Wan. But their ‘challenge’ attracted attention from other interested parties that they decided to turn the climb into a charitable effort. That was when they roped in Thanuja Ananthan, Miss Malaysia-World 2009. Since Thanuja is the Ambassador of NCSM, it is just fitting that the charity drive is aimed towards helping the society.
Community airline Firefly, operated by Fly Firefly Sdn Bhd decided to be part of this charity project by pledging the return air tickets for the Ambassador of NCSM. And as a motivation to the climbers, Firefly has also sponsored another two return tickets KL-Sandakan-KL for the 1st climber to reach the peak.
The event led by Kattie, Doreen and Thanuja is called The Climb of Hope. It is a self-funded event whereby the participants will bear all cost of the climb. And since Katie is an employee of Sutera Harbour Resort, the hotel is supporting the event in line with one of its core values – community involvement. It is sponsoring meals and accommodation at Kinabalu Park/Laban Rata and at The Pacific Sutera Resort.
The other event sponsor is Timberland who is supporting the climbers with shoes and apparels. Voluntary climbers from the resort include Samuel Gacos, Group Director of Sales and Marketing, June Poon, Senior Sales Manager and Ivan Tan from the Graphics Department. Also participating is the General Manager of Sutera Sanctuary Lodges, Adrian Rozario.
All pledges made will be fully channelled to NCSM, a registered tax exempt charity body and the first cancer related NGO in the country that provides education, care and support services for people affected by cancer. The Climb of Hope aims to raise at least RM50,000.
“We climb for hope. We fundraise for a worthy cause and we seek your support to reach that goal with your pledge,” says Kattie.
“Your donation is not only tax deductible but it will also provide holistic cancer treatment and support to patients and caregivers.”
NCSM takes the patients through their journey in understanding and dealing with cancer in various phases through its five cancer centres – Cancer Treatment Centre, Women’s Cancer Detection Centre, Nuclear Medicine Centre, Resource & Wellness Centre and the Children’s Home of Hope.
